Whether you’re looking to create or contribute
to a better world, these links can help you do it.
Lark
Books – Our
amazing Asheville-based publishers offer books covering just
about
every art and craft conceivable. Their editors and designers
are themselves artists. They take the designs and copy we send
them and transform them through their photography and page
design into a must-have book.
Belle Armoire/Stampington & Co. – Barnes & Noble
says Stampington’s magazines are #1 in the “General
Crafts” category. It’s no wonder, given the elegance
and whimsy in their publications. A special November issue
called Altered Couture will show off Marty’s shoe designs
and Belle Armoire’s January ’07 issue will show
off her bead and wire jewelry designs.
Fire
Mountain Gems – One of
the most respected bead and jewelry-making suppliers in the
country. Their catalogue taught us the difference between all
those agates and jaspers. Plus, they offer beautiful designs
online. (We’re also eternally grateful to them for supplying
us for our upcoming book Vintage Beaded Jewelry Designs. Thank
you, Tammy!)
House
of Hope – House of Hope is a residential
recovery home located in San Pedro, California
that provides a safe, sober and nurturing environment for substance
abusing women. We’ve donated our jewelry to them at holiday
time to provide gifts to those in the program.
City
of Hope Donor Program - Christine decided to become part
of this hospital’s
bone marrow donor registry, and saved a total stranger’s
life when they discovered she was a match! If you want to make
a difference and live in Southern California (or near any member
of the National
Marrow Donor Program,
this is a great way to do it. From their website:
BeadforLife -
BeadforLife helps poverty-stricken women in Uganda earn a living
by making vibrant and colorful
jewelry from paper beads made of recycled paper. You can purchase
loose beads as well as jewelry from their online store. (No,
we’re not crazy for sending you off to another jewelry
site. By supporting them, you’re supporting creative
women – and that’s what Half the Sky is all about.)
Global
Exchange – This San Francisco-based
organization is one of the groups that Marty worked with when
she did human rights work down in Chiapas, Mexico in the aftermath
of the Zapatista rebellion. They have a wide-range of programs
helping people in crisis worldwide.
Women
for Women International – Their
goal is to help women in war-torn areas transform their nations
and social status, to help them go from victim to survivor
to pro-active citizen.
“An Inconvenient Truth”/Global Warming – You
gotta love Al Gore. (We certainly do.) Forget slasher films
and horror movies – the most terrifying film we’ve
seen this year is “An Inconvenient Truth” featuring
the former Veep. This website not only provides a lot of the
info that’s in the movie, but also offers realistic ways
for all of us to reduce what we contribute to the problem.
Sparkhill
Productions - We'd be remiss if we
didn't hook you up with the production company working on the
DVD version of "An Inconvenient Truth" - if only
because Marty's wonderful brother-in-law Eric Young is head of the company.
