But really - who’s behind all this?
MARTY
STEVENS-HEEBNER
is an author, designer and all-around renegade crafter. She and Christine Calla co-authored Beaded
Vintage Jewelry Designs (Lark/Sterling Publishing) and is currently writing Head Over Heels: Shoes that Knock Your Socks Off (Northlight/F&W Publishing), due out in Fall 2008. You can also find her
designs in A Closet Full of Shoes: Simple Ways to Make Them Chic
(Chapelle/Sterling Publishing). Marty’s also appeared on HGTV’s
Crafters Coast to Coast and also shot two episodes of the DIY network’s series Craft Lab.
Color and variety are a hallmark of Marty’s designs. She’s often inspired
by things she’s found on her travels – she’s been to every continent.
(That includes Antarctica, where she discovered penguins really stink.)
Her current work with recycled materials was inspired by her time spent
in Chiapas, Mexico, where she did human rights work in the aftermath of
the Zapatista rebellion, which helps explain her rebellious streak.
CHRISTINE CALLA
is an author, jewelry designer and mother of three. (She includes her husband in that tally.)
She began making jewelry after her husband was in a dreadful car accident and she was desperate
for a way to soothe herself during his long recovery. After thoroughly cannibalizing her ‘80s
jewelry and giving away her creations as gifts, requests and orders began pouring in from
family and friends, so it was time to get serious. Christine has a bold eye for design
and a true knack for finding unique pendants and stones that make her work a must-have
for any jewelry collection. She’s also an American citizen who was raised in the
Philippines and she helped facilitate Half the Sky’s foray there.
Christine and Marty met at the first arts festival either had ever taken part in,
the Brand Boulevard Arts Festival in Glendale, California. It rained, no one
came and the day would have been an unmitigated disaster for both had their
booths not been side by side. Thanks to this proximity and the bond that
shared duress often forms, a wonderful new friendship took root. And that
made up for everything, once their clothes were dry.
